Old Fort MacArthur Days, AD 2006

Old Fort MacArthur Days 2006 (July 8-9) was another triumphant weekend for Legio VI. Though we did not have quite as big or spectacular an encampment as in 2005, the event ran smoothly and we were able to debut a number of exciting new impressions (such as Jim Whitley's and Ramon Castillo's dueling Praetorian tribunes, Norm Morris as our Medicus, and Tony Martos as the Emperor Hadrian, no less!). We also displayed some impressive new additions to our encampment, including our beautiful new altar and Legionary Eagle. Five new recruits enjoyed their first Fort Mac as miletes, and we had a terrific time fighting in the Silly War, an all-out inter-generational melee that pitted Romans and Scottish Highlanders against Civil War infantrymen, Pirates and World War II Marines. Alas, a missing component prevented us from firing our ballista, but it remains the meanest piece of Roman artillery out there. All in all, a terrific time was had by everyone, and we're already making plans for OFMD 2007!  Most of the photos below were supplied by Jim Whitley and Scott Timmons. Scott, a new member of Legio VI but an old friend of the Centurio's, is a columnist for the Valley Voice, a Visalia-based Newspaper. His excellent column on his experience at Fort Mac can be found HERE.

Needlefelt sparring action between Crixus (Mike Malin, foreground) and Pulcher (Kevin Goller).

...and scores with his own backslash to the neck. Not classic, but effective.

Mike and Kevin converge in a rare double-kill.

Matthias (Matt Bell) and Scipio (Adrian Gajdos) practice the classic Roman thrust.

Matt and Adrian square off...

More scenes from the inspection: Slave Devin attends to his master. Note our new legionary eagle!

Hadrian chats with a lowly grunt.

The emperor is pleased with this one so far, but wait until he turns around and shows that busted lorica backplate...

The Centurio and Optio inspect a comilito.

Satorius, as always, is ready to take down the Emperor's every word.

Hey, is he writing down something about us?

Post-inspection, Centurio, Aquilifer and Legionary return to camp.

The Praefect in all his Attic-helmeted glory.

Honoria (Laura Martos) samples a tasty date.

The melee gets underway, with Legio IX leading the charge.

In the background, Legio VI rolls out the heavy artillery-- a cannon firing through the ranks (provided by the Gentlemen Adventurers)!

The Pikemen of the Gentlemen Adventurers get in the action. One of Legio VI's members (Pulcher, aka Kevin Goller) secured a secret weapon-- a black powder carbine!

Captain Oberon, leader of our campmates, the Brethren of the Coast.

Another piratical member of the Brethren, this one looking rather familiar...

Whaddya mean, pirate?! I'm an officially sanctioned Privateer!

Only at Fort Mac: British paratrooper, Privateer and Spanish Civil War loyalist share a time-warp moment.

A pair of pulchritudinous pirates from Brethren of the Coast.

A pair of German colonials of Africa in the pre-World War I era.

Gen. MacArthur inspects the goings on at his namesake fort.

At teardown, Scott seems stuck halfway between the Roman and modern worlds...
