Old Fort MacArthur Days, AD 2005
Old Fort MacArthur Days 2005 proved to be Legio VI's
biggest, most spectacular encampment yet. Our numbers bolstered by members of
Legio X Fretensis (Vallejo, CA, led by Primus Pilus Robert Garbisch) and Legio
XXII (Cincinnati, OH, represented by Centurio Ernst Deksheimer), we had a total of 30
participants and an amazing array of impressions, including a legionary legate,
two centurions, four Praetorian guardsmen, four Roman ladies, a Vestal Virgin, two gladiators, and
the Emperor Hadrian! The encampment included Legio X's all-leather command tent
and Jared Fleury's new hand-made contuburnium tent. Our scenario placed us in
Judaea, AD 134, fighting the "rebel and terrorist Simon Bar Kochba," a campaign
bringing together detachments of several legions within a single encampment as
well as local Roman magistrates and their families seeking safety from rebel
attacks. The camp also featured Robert Garbisch's display of Roman armor through
the ages, Legio VI's impressive ballista, and a visitor from the far future-- the 5th century AD! In the
end, Legio VI and its companion legions won a signal victory, earning the 2005
Espirit de Corps Award for the event's best pre-Colonial Encampment.
