Lancaster Poppy Festival

The California Poppy Festival is a family-friendly event held each April in Lancaster on the California High Desert, celebrating the annual blooming of the state flower. Legio VI was invited to set up an encampment in the International Marketplace in 2006, and we were such a big hit we've been given a permanent invitation. While not a "serious" historical event, the Poppy Fest is a lot of fun for everyone and gives us an opportunity to education people about Ancient Rome. Plus, where else can one witness a wedding between a Scottish highland bagpiper and a woad-painted Celtic warrior girl, or an epic battle between a Roman Centurion and Batman?

This and the following shots show Arik Greenberg and Matt Hicks unpacking and unfolding Legio VI's new leather tent.

Just prior to erecting the tent, one can see why the Romans termed it a "pappilio," or "butterfly."

The tent, fully set up. Before it are Artorius (John DeSalvo, Flavius (Dave Michaels) and Diogenes (Arik Greenberg).

Close up of the "rain flap" running along the side edges.

Flavius and Diogenes confer. On guard is Petroclus (Peter Hopkins).

Sitting down for a nice midday meal...

A nice, clean armor display.

A visitor to the camp tries on some Roman kit.

Epona, the Celtic wild child (Alex Michaels), wakes up on her wedding day.

The Scottish pipers bring the groom to the Roman camp.

Epona meets the best man and father-of-the-bride rolled into one, none other than Batman!

The wedding ceremony gets started, with the Roman officers presiding...

Vibria (Kris Lehere) with the happy couple.

Sidonia (Brittany Wills), priestess of Isis, offers her blessing.

Attempting to rescue his daughter, the Centurio encounters Batman, guarding the wedding tent. Who won? Who cares?
