Fort Lafe, AD 43 A.U.C. 2760 (A.D. 2007)

Legio VI sent a six-member expeditionary team to Lafe, AR for the annual Fort Lafe A.D. 43 event March 23-25, 2007 (the previous year, we'd sent only two!). Legio IX Hispana sent 10 soldiers, plus a trailer full of gear driven out by Centurio Hibernicus (Sean Richards), bringing the total California contingent to 16! This year, the scenarios and role-playing were on a whole new level. HERE is Centurio Flavius' account of the event in full. Below are some photos from this year's "full immersion" weekend. Thanks to Mike Malin (Crixus), Jared Fleury (Florentius) of Legio VI, Caius Fabius of Legio II (AR), and Mario Padilla (Marius) and Peter Van Rossum (Micarius) of Legio IX Hispana for the photos.

Alex Michaels and friend Chris Saddler portray woad-painted Iceni mounted warrior women.

Legio XXIV Media Atlantica's magnificent ballista, mounted on the front parapet.

The vicus sported a new mud-brick bread oven, which produced some savory loaves.

A slice of life from inside Fort Lafe, camps of Legio XXII Primagenia and VI Victrix.

The Celtic round house, sadly uncompleted.

A selection of Celtic weapons, armor and accessories, most belonging to Nate Bell (Brionnach).

Centurio T. Flavius Crispus checks the day's schedule.

Gaius Artorius Crixus (Mike Malin) as an Iceni warrior. He "went native" on Day 3.

Crixus under the watchful eye of Centurio Gallio (George Metz) of Legio XXIV MA.

Flavius before Legio VI's new leather contuburnium tent, brought all the way from California. Note the nice, rough-hewn tent poles, cut on site!

A closer look at Legio VI's papilio. Unlike last year, the weather stayed warm and we all got plenty of sleep.

Quintus Florentius Agrippa (Jared Fleury) brought his own contuburnium tent, and lived in high style.

A view of the front gate.

Gunny Red Millis of Legio II Augusta (AR), the morning drill master.

Centurio Hibernicus (Sean Richards) confers with the Gunny and Centurio Marsinius (Craig Nordquist) of Legio XXII.

Members of Legio IX Hispana lay out their camp site.

Once completed, the IX camp had as many tents as the Army of the Potomac!

A work detail loads up the cart in front of the main barracks block.

One of the newly finished watch towers at the north east corner of the fort.

Iberius and Rufus of Legio IX stand guard duty at the uncompleted rear fort entrance.

Flavius climbs down from the gate parapet.

Iberius and Marsinius note enemy dispositions.

A nice view of the main barracks block.

The all-important latrina and therme (baths) complex.

One of the comely locals who made us legionaries feel quite welcome... until the rebellion, of course.

Iberius, as always, has a way with comely locals...
